The planets (including the sun and the moon, for astrological purposes) have an effect on our lives by their position in the sky. Their gravitational influence ripples throughout the solar system. Their relationship to one another and to us can affect us in a myriad of different ways. Before Galileo first pointed his telescope at the sky, it was believed that all planets, including the Sun, revolved around the Earth. The known planets were those that could be seen with the naked eye, and included : The Sun, Mercury, Venus, The Moon, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn. These seven planets formed the basis of ancient ceremonies and early astrology, for it was noticed that these 'wandering stars' always stayed with a band of the sky known as the zodiac. Over time, a complex system of measurement and understanding evolved that became the astrological system we know today. When Neptune and Uranus were discovered, they were seen as harmonic aspects of the moon. Pluto became an extended version of Mars, affecting generations, rather than individuals.

The planets are an important part of any astrological and magical working. Finding the right time, when certain planetary aspects are at their best can significantly increases the efficacy of any project, ritual or working you choose to undertake!
